On the 29th of January, as Shadow Housing Minister I contributed to the Westminster Hall Debate objecting to Labour's housing targets madness!
There is no doubt that there is a need for more housing, however these homes need to be built in the right place and by a method that ensures voices of local communities are listened to.
The targets Labour have made are both unrealistic and unpopular, and even worse, the methodology behind them seems to represent a cynical gerrymandering exercise of political opportunism.
Areas such as East Hampshire, the New Forest and Fareham are being told to build more houses than Manchester. Meanwhile, cities such as Labour-run Southampton, Nottingham and Coventry see their targets slashed by as much as 50%!
It makes no sense to reduce housing targets in urban areas, where it is easier to build due to existing infrastructure, population density and the availability of brownfield sights!
