This video provides a short update on the One Horton Heath, which is a development of 2,500 homes put forward by Lib Dem Eastleigh Borough Council.
I'm opposed to this development for several reasons:
- It represents excessive housebuilding and more overdevelopment on green fields.
- The development will make flooding worse in the area and the Council are not doing enough to mitigate these problems
- The Council are the developer and the planning authority which creates a conflict of interest.
- As a result of this, I'm worried that planning rules are being ignored and standards aren't being followed
For the last few months I’ve been working to try and make sure that if this development, proposed by the Lib Dem Council had to go ahead, we had the right measures put in place to mitigate flooding and environmental issues caused by building 2,500 houses on Horton Heath. Following meetings with the Environment Agency, I obtained a report that showed that flooding in Allington Lane would be made worse by this development and that works needed to be done to the gulleys and culverts. I approached the Council who assured me that they’d look into this and do the works necessary by working with the Environment Agency. Once the Council submitted planning permission, it told me there was no issue and that this wasn’t their responsibility. I’m not convinced, and next week I’ll be raising this with Ministers.
It isn’t right that the Lib Dem Council can decide planning permission, build and develop this site without listening to the concerns of the people. Local Conservatives continue to pressure and seek solutions. Ultimately though, we need Conservative Councillors to help me achieve real change.
