Today the Labour Government broke their promise to you.
In the general election, just two short months ago Keir Starmer made a promise to give pensioners security in retirement and to look after the most vulnerable in society.
They say a week is a long time in politics, but the speed with which Labour has decided to U-turn and then turn on pensioners has shocked me, and I am sure it has shocked you too.
As a result of today’s vote, which I and my colleagues in the Conservative Party opposed, Labour will strip ten million pensioners of the vital winter fuel payment, just as the cold weather begins to sweep in.
That is ten million pensioners who are at risk of going cold this winter, all so Labour’s union buddies can have their above-inflation pay rises.
No matter how you voted in the election, this is about fairness and honesty. I just want you to ask yourselves is it fair that 18,371 pensioners in Hamble Valley may now have to choose between heating and eating all because Keir Starmer wanted to spend billions on appeasing his union paymasters?
Is it honest for Labour to claim their plans are fully funded and that they will protect pensioners only to decide that they now need more money to throw at inflation-busting pay deals and that pensioners don’t matter?
I for one do not, and I am deeply concerned about this Government’s reckless disregard for the elderly who have paid into our system all their lives and who are now being short-changed by a government that does not seem to care about them.
Please be assured, that I will continue to oppose this government’s war on pensioners, and I promise to stand up for the most vulnerable in our community in Hamble Valley.
